The Stagnone is an enchanting reserve with a shallow and warm body of water. Framed between the island of Mothia, Isola Lunga and the island of Santa Maria, it is home to the beautiful salt pans with their mills and salt ponds. There, the pink flamingos are found more often and over time in increasingly numerous groups within an ideal habitat for breeding and resting during migration. They are pink precisely because they absorb the colour of the waters, which are rich in minerals, salt and Posidonia, a protected marine plant. The pink flamingo is among the most elegant waders that frequent the Stagnone. With their beaks in the water, they can be seen in the Stagnone filtering the waters in search of molluscs, aquatic insects and small crustaceans. And it is from the latter, especially the small shrimp Artemia salina, that they obtain the pigments that give their feathers their characteristic pink colour.
