The name Absolut was invented in 1879 by Lars Olsson Smith, an important Swedish entrepreneur, who invented a new method of fractionated distillation of Brannvin in 1877, with which he produced a fuselol-free liqueur that he named 'Tiodubbelt Renadt Br\u00e4nnvin' (Purified Vodka composed of ten parts); at that time there was a Stockholm monopoly on the sale of liqueurs: in order to be able to sell his product, he bought a shop where he could sell Absolut at competitive prices, just outside the city limits; towards the end of the century he also began to export the liquor. In 1917, the alcohol industry in Sweden was monopolised by the Swedish government, through the company Vin & Spirit.In the 1970s, V&S president Lars Lindmark, decided to challenge the US market: he had the recipe reworked and after several proposals from the marketing research team, the name Absolut vodka and the design were chosen.On 17 June 1979, Absolut was launched in Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and 90,000 litres were sold in the first year.
